Rajapaksa further said that nothing the government touched had so far gone wrong. He reminded that they were able to change the course that was followed for 20 years and enter a new path. This was achieved within three years of their coming to power. At the time the UPFA won the Presidential Election in 2005, almost the entire North and East was under LTTE control. Even Trincomalee was under the Tigers’ shadow. Today the enemy’s territory has been reduced to 30 square kilometers and about half of that is the lagoon, he pointed out.

The Tiger weapons that the army has seized have revealed that the enemy had arms enough to equip two enemy forces and that the LTTE had combatants even more than the number that intelligence sources had indicated

Rajapaksa however warned that the public should never relax their vigilance although the military aspect of the conflict has now reached its virtual end. While the cancer of terrorism has been removed the residue had to be removed by ‘radiotherapy.’ Incidents such as the bomb blast at Akuressa have proved the need to be on high alert constantly.
